Chelsea is an area Central London bounded by the River Thames and it is bordered by the districts of Earls Court, South Kensington, Belgravia, Victoria, Pimlico, Battersea, Sands End and West Brompton. The district of Chelsea is part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
The first record of the Manor of Chelsea precedes the Doomsday Book and records the fact that Thurstan a governor during the reign of Edward the Confessor gave the land to Abbot Gervace who later signed the land over to his mother and passed it into private ownership. By 1694 Chelsea was a popular location for the wealthy and had a population of over 3000. Even still Chelsea remained a rural area serving as a market garden until the 19th century when the district eventually became absorbed by the London metropolis.
Once known for its reputation as the London bohemian quarter, Chelsea was the haunt of artists, painters and poets. Now little of this culture survives as Kings Road is inhabited by investment bankers, film stars and more recently Kylie Minogue and the Chelsea College of Art and Design founded in 1895 moved to Pimlico in 2005.Chelsea shone once again for a brief moment in the 60's and the early 70's during the period of Swinging London. This period was defined on Kings Road where both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones lived here at one time.
